[Tearlach]

Elgin, North-East Scotland. January, 1896.

The leaden skies over the airfield grew even darker as snow-laden clouds drifted across them, almost blocking out the weak winter sun. As the first flurries of snow begain to fall, the eighty foot tall doors to the main hanger slowly opened, revealing for the first time to public view the Daedalus.
At over nine hundred feet long and a diameter of one hundred and fifty wide, the Daedalus was the largest airship ever constructed.

The air ship began to move slowly out of the hanger towed along like a child's toy balloon by two steam tractors to her mooring mast. Once there and firmly secured with tethers, both ground and air crew alike dashed about her like chicks around a brooding mother hen. The Daedalus was a combination of new materials and science and soon would show the world what she was truly capable of.
Standing before the panoramic window in the airship's passenger lounge, her creator, Tearlach Desson, watched the activity below silently, with his paws clasped tight behind is back.
This should have been a joyous time for him and his family, the culmination of his dream and hard work. but all Tearlach could feel was a bitter sense of betrayal and loss.

I have worked out the route the the Daedalus will be taking 15oE by45oS.
A course which will take her across the North Sea, over the Netherlands and Germany and into Austria. A journey of about four days.

The sound of his sister's voice broke through Tearlach's introspection, he turned just as she entered the saloon on the arm of his first officer, closely followed by his ward Biebhinn.
Talitha was infusing the upon every aspect of the airship to the young lapine lieutenant as if it was he had designed and built the craft rather then her brother and herself. Taking notice of her brother at last Talitha gave a small wave of recognition in his direction.
" Oh my dear brother! I am sorry we are so late. This delightfully hansome young officer was courteous enough to show Beibhinn and I around the ship when we came on board."
As Talitha said this she had placed her hand on his chest, but as her hand dropped back down it brushed against the front of the lieutenant's jodhpurs. The officers only reaction was a twitch of his whiskers. Throughout the entire tour he had endured the vixen's wandering hands. It was not that he minded the attention, but just that it was so blatent. In the engineering section as he was bent over an engine whilst discribing the workings of the propulsion system, Talitha had 'Goosed' his bottom and caused him to jump upright and hit his head on an over-head pipe.
That had been bad enough, however Talitha then made a fuss over him insisting on examining the bump on his head while taking the opportunity to press her bust onto his face.
The first officer eventually managed to disengage himself from the vixen's grasp with assurences that he was well enought to continue with the tour. At least the captain's ward Beibhinn was embarassed enough by her companions behaviour to blush bright red which he noted caused her ears to match her eyes. And so with the maintance crew laughter ringing in his own ears they had made their way through the rest of the ship.

"Well, we are finally away." Tearlach spoke softly "And I am sure Mr Darcy has duties to attend to on the bridge."
The lapine officer saluted with relief " Yes sir, on my way"
However Talitha was not letting him get away that easily. Taking his arm with hand she looked into his eyes.
" Oh lieutenant you will be joing us for dinner won't you?" Giving him a wink.
"Ah I..."
Fortunately he was interupted by the whistle of the speaking tube next to the panoramic window. Beibhinn had walked over to window behind Tearlach and it was she who answered the call.
She lifted the rubber tube from its mounting and held its brass mouth-piece to her ear. Nodding in affirmation to what was being said, Beibhinn moved the tube to her muzzle and spoke in same soft Scottish accent as Tearlach and Talitha.
" Thank you. I will inform the Captain."
Replacing the tube on to it's mounting she turned and gave a rare smile.
" It would seem that Matilda has escaped. She broke out from her travelling box as it was being loaded on board."
Talitha was distraught " Oh my poor baby! Tearlach you must find her she will be so frightened all on her own"
" I am sure the crew are doing everything they can to do so, Matilda will not have gone very far." Tearlach replied making a calming motion with his hands.
" Matilda, Sir?" inquired Lieutenant Darcy.
"Yes. My sister's little pet. The lady Talitha is quite attached to her."
Darcy turned to Talitha his embarasment now evolved into concern" Please My lady don't concern yourself I will find your little 'Matilda' and bring her to you."
As he said this Darcy felt a several sharp tugs on the leg of his Jodhpurs, and a strange sibilant voice spoke;
"Hello sssailor, give usss a kissss"

Darcy looked down and found five coal-black pupil-less eyes staring back at him. These eyes belonged to the the biggest spider he had ever seen.
Four feet long and covered in black and brown hairs it was using its VERY large fangs to grip his Jodhpurs.

The vulpines in the room all whinced as Darcy's scream begain in the ultra sonic range and gradually came down into the regular hearing ranges.
The spider let go of Darcy and scuttling backwards hid under a nearby table, hissing loudly. Three decks up on the bridge, the crew were looking at each other with mild puzzlement.
"What the hell was that?" Someone inquired.
" I think someone's found Lady Talitha's pet" came the reply.
There was a collective "Ah!" and nodding of heads and the bridge crew returned to their duties.
