|Thy soul shall find itself alone
'Mid dark thoughts of the grey tomb-stone --
Not one, of all the crowd, to pry
Into thine hour of secrecy:
Be silent in that solitude
Which is not loneliness -- for then
The spirits of the dead who stood
In life before thee are again
In death around thee -- and their will
Shall then overshadow thee: be still.
Edgar Allan Poe
Bon Bon Palace Casino, October 1895
Tearlach sat in a alcove, sipping a large malt whisky and watched the Autumn rain gently pattering against the bay window.
The weather match his mood as he turned the events of the last few months over and over in his mind. The pain of betrayal by Tegwyn still burned in his heart, almost as searing was the knowledge that his government had betrayed him too. He felt used, soiled even. Tearlach took a large mouthful of whisky, draining the glass. The strong peaty liquor stung the back of his throat, however it was not that which almost brought a tear to his eye.
A soft tap-tapping drew his attention. Looking over his shoulder in to the casino Tearlach saw a small male mole, immaculately dressed in a dark blue evening suit, making his way, slowly, towards Tearlach's table. The tapping came from a long ivory cane, held in the mole's large left paw.
The near blind mole moved his head from side to side and seemed to be sniffing the air around him. Suddenly he stopped and pointing the cane at Tearlach, he inquired.
Tearlach allowed himself a small courteous smile, stood up and moved away from the table. He bowed low at the waist and replied." Indeed, Shimada-Sama."
The mole bowed his head in return and held out his right arm. Tearlach moved to the mole's side and taking the offered arm gently by the elbow and guided the mole back to the table.
Sitting down Shimada Tetsuo carefully placed his ivory walking stick by his side and folded his paws over his stomach, waiting for Tearlach to settle himself opposite before speaking.
"Desson-san, it is a honour to finally meet you at last."
" The honour is mine, Shimada-Sama" Tearlach responded, adding.
" I am curious, my lord how were able to find me in such a crowded room when.." He hesitated suddenly aware of the discourtesy of pointing out his guests disability.
The mole waved the the claws of one paw in a dismissive gesture. " I am not totally blind, and the scent of a male fox is quite distinctive as is that of a fine malt whisky." He finished with a smile.
The last remark caused Tearlach to chuckle. " Forgive me Lord Shimada. I am neglecting my duties as a host. Would you like some refreshments. Saki, perhaps?"
Lord Shimada shook his head. " Some of that excellent whisky would be most welcome. Tearlach-Chan."
Tearlach raised his paw and caught the attention of a passing waitress and ordered a bottle of 18 year old Glenmorangie and a another glass.
When the waitress returned with the bottle, Tearlach poured out a generous measure for both of them and raised his glass.
"Alba gu brath !" he said.
Lord Shimada raised his glass too. "Kampi !" Both took a large gulp of the amber liquid and settled into silence.
Tearlach stared into his glass dreading the question that must come next.
Lord Shimada spoke, the mole's soft voice breaking into the hushed atmosphere like a footfall in fresh snow.
" Have you made your decision Desson-chan?"
Tearlach nodded. " Aye, I have. My family and I will accept your offer. We will come to Japan and work for your government."
The mole sighed. " I know it means disgrace to betray your own government.."
" They betrayed me!" Tearlach interrupted angrily. "Sent spies to watch me, to.." He shook his head. "Forgive me, my lord. My outburst.."
"Was understandable. I known some of the events that have lead you to Bon Bon. I hope that you will find the peace to work and think in peace in Nippon."
" That is my hope too" Tearlach replied.
" Tell me Tearlach-chan. Have you you enjoyed your time here?" the mole made a encompassing gesture with his paws.
" For the most part." Tearlach took another sip of his whisky. " It is a nice place to visit. But...It can be very tiring!" He finished with a smile.
Lord Shimada laughed. "Perhaps in Nippon Tearlach-chan you could become a monk!?"
" I said it was tiring on occasion, my lord. Not that I did not enjoy it!"
Tearlach said waving a paw.
"When will you leave?"
This question took Tearlach by surprise. He hesitated before replying.
"In the next few days. The Daedalus will arrive in Tokyo within a week of our departure. Will you travel with us my lord?"
The mole nodded. " Yes. Yes I would like that very much. Thank you Tearlach-chan."
They toasted each other again and settled down to talking about more mundane subjects.
An hour later both stood outside the entrance to the casino, umbrellas sheltering then from the rain.
Lord Shimada spoke. "Sayonara Tearlach-Chan. Until we met again tomorrow."
" Indeed. If I may be so bold Lord Shimada, I would like to say I believe this to be the beginning of a very great friendship"
