PostPosted: Wed Mar 24, 2010 10:35 pm    Post subject: New Map for Bon Bon Proposed by Mr. S. Fox Reply with quote

Mr. Sky B Fox of Bon Bon has proposed a new map to the town council. When he was up soaring in his glider one day he noticed the town's map was more or less incomplete when he was scouting possible locations for his activities. So over a period of a few weeks he toured around Bon Bon's perimeter and hiked trails for the purpose of revising the map.

And back to reality! No, I'm not being serious but I thought it presenting my proposal to the fellow members of the Bon Bon community through the style of my fursona might make it a little interesting as to why I did this and to show a little of what he's like and what he does gliding around up there.

So what have we got here??? Well one is that handsome young fox with the flying contraptions I've been bragging about and hoping Vanessa will accept, but primarily there's my proposal for a map of Bon Bon, mind you it's not a great quality but it was simplest I could make it. Since December I've been reading Bon Bon cover to cover and of course wanted to join the community. But as I developed my fursona character I realized to make his story work he'd need a map of the town and so I looked for one. A fellow member, The Adept brought it to my attention and showed me one that was drawn up by a member I'm informed is no longer here. I give the member grllover23 due credit for listening to everyone's opinions and ideas but I thought to myself there were a few inconsistencies.

Over the months as I read the comic, I looked closely at Vanessa's backgrounds and tried to come up with an orientation, streets, buildings, every time there was a look at the scenery in every comic from Scarlet to Randy to the main story, from a balacony, a road, through a window and I started to develope a vision of what Bon Bon would look like from the air as a town.

So after seeing the map I compared it to the comic and thought I'd try a different type of map and offer it to you, the community and to Vanessa. So this evening, based on my observations and even hints of items from the story, I created this proposed map you've seen with the list of ideas taken into account:

* I drew this up with taking into account that Bon Bon is in a mountain valley (or appears to be, I know it's mountains) and is in Europe.
* The town in a valley with its orientation running north/south, changed the outward structure of the delight castle to a victorian palace style instead of a pentagon with a courtyard in back placed at the very end of the city that it's viewable from the city gates and main roads to the south. *I placed Simon Blue's house in a recession of the hills to the north mountains viewable from Edelweiss' balcony, even drew a notch in the main mansion gate where Betty and Mary would exchange their letters (envelope symbol).
* Changed the street layout to coincide with the valley's topography, you can even see how farms and houses along the mountains (red lines) are turned to flow with the mountains' curl. I even took into account the market being an open air market would need road and railroad access to receive goods.
* Scarlet's castle is in the southwest but that could change to the northeast easily, wasn't a hundred percent sure but went by the town's orientation on the first page.

Red line=Mountain Profile
Green=Bon Bon town perimeter
Blue=water body or river
Brown=Road

And of course other details such as main roads, an assymetrical street layoutwith common circles and center shrub dividers, the lake, the park, farms to the north from Vanessa's use of realisitc scenery when Betty was a child on Edelweiss' balcony, hotels with courtyards that are the circles in the southwest corner- a whole lot more than I can type right now. *looks up* YEESH!!! I'm long winded! Shocked

Okay, so let me wrap this up. Based on my observations I've envisioned Bon Bon being as so and over the last few hours I roughed out this proposal and wonder if anyone is interested in seeing it finished? If Vanessa, Ronald or any member of the staff is displeased or wrong forum then I have problem with that. But as a fan and forum member I'm offering this map for Vanessa and all the members of Bon Bon and would delight in finishing it for any and all of you, making changes would be no problem.

If you like it that's fine and if not, that's fine too. Smile Would like your opinions/questions if you want to know why certain things are that way and I had fun giving it a shot anyway so thanks for your time.

Interesting, but the scale seems off, like if one were to condense the BonBon valley to Disneyland-esque dimensions. I suppose if one were to make a truly canon map of Bonbon (not counting dwellings requested/suggested by Royal Members), this is a good start.

Hehe, you guys noticed that, eh? And hello Gantros, nice to meet you. Smile

You are correct, the scale is off. You'll have to excuse that but this was only a rough, not to mention my scanner isn't very big. I did this on a 8.5x14 paper and that was the biggest my scanner could do, plus its length seamed to fit a valley. But the final version would be made to correct scale, I just wanted this one to show the main items such as the delight castle, Simon's house, the main promenade where Outback Omnibus would be and some other items I thought would be there based on what Vanessa had drawn. It's the red line that defines the mountains that makes it appear that way of Disneyland. It represents the flat part of town where all the buildings are built on the same flat foundation but that line is more a reference for how the mountains surround the town, not the actual mountain tops or anything so they'll be pushed back when I enlarge and paint how they slope up. But the original made Bon Bon look smaller than Pahrump Nevada with few streets or anything.

The final scale I've extrapolated would be roughly 2 times longer up and down and half more wide. So I'll correct the scale if I get the final word to finish it. Smile

No problem with that. Smile Probably what I'll do if I finish it, is enarlge it then cut it off into sectors with letter and numbers like on a road map, then let people one at a time pick their grid sectors of where they'd live. But there's double the apartments and buildings in the southwest corner now but the southern most corner is taken up by a couple hotels that overlook the park. And there's still room around the town's edges for mansions or new estate properties I haven't drawn yet.

That puts him about 8 miles out of town given average humanoid walking speed over rough terrain. Could be done.

True, but remember Bon Bon's in mountains, and mountainous terrain takes more and I know, I hiked for eight years.

UPDATE: I'm going to color code this map in my photoshop today to make it a little clearer but unless I get asked to finish it that'll be the farthest I go, including another size of scale.

There'll be a photoshop rough later tonight, just gotta get over my shaken nerves about last night. And it didn't help withe the lime in the coconut! Razz I forgot what that whole song was about! XD

If you intend to include Royal Member dwellings eventually, do you plan to actually design them for the map, or is it a simple layout map?

Hey, any way people want it. Smile If people even want me to design their mansions for their characters, I'm game. I'm a draftsman, I can design homes and such. I've even imagined the floorplan of the Delight Castle.

I had thought Sky would do the map like an entire aerial sketch, so yeah I can design entire property shapes into it. Just have to wait until the map is in a semi-finished state that is in a layout and scale everyone agrees on before I start assigning the actual land plots on it. Let me get back to you later today with the Ver.II map and we'll see how you like the changes.

45Dragons pointed out another panel that changed the northern area slightly so I need to make some minor changes to the mountains and alter the compass rose.

Hi guys. Okay, here's the fruits of my labor as promised. This is the Ver.II map I've interpolated and delivered as promised. This map is bigger than the previous. I stretched and widened the valley, added the one valley to the north that branches off and even added new districts to the town. It may look cheesy but believe me, this is NOWHERE from being finished where I have in mind, I thought a color code would help you see it all better.

I won't repeat everything I used to extract this image or why I'm trying to redo it but my reasons are on the top of the page, the first posting *points upward to the previous posts*. But with this one I'll leave you a legend so you can get ideas. But if you like it, I can still add what's needed, as the light green area is meant to be filled out with either building expansions or private homes and the mountains along with it, plus there would be houses up there on them. Good skiing property in winter, no???

Colors
Dark Green=Mountains
Light Green=Valley and Outskirts
Tan=Roads
Brown=Houses
Black Lines=Alleys

Districts
Magenta=High Class (Delight castle and high cost areas)
Purple= Streetwalker (Where most amature girls congregate with rooms and hotels)
Light Blue=Market (Food, clothing, general stores)
Yellow=Resorts (Day spas, five star hotels, services)
White=Town Hall and city government buildings

I know I forgot to show a scale but based on the size of the delight castle I've determined in this version, the main city is just under three miles long and one wide with the valley running 7-8 miles long and just over two wide. (Also, I work across the street from Disneyland, that place is bigger than you guys think with California Adventure attached.)

What I'm still missing is the valley has to be turned to the final compass direction, some streets in the districts, the railroad track and a few farms and fences from my original. I might even give the final image one last streeetch to get it a little longer. So in the end, there's plenty of room to grow and put in people's residences or bussinesses. So there you all have it, my proposal and idea I'm offering for the community.

So if you like it and want to see it go on, I'm glad. If you don't no problem, I had fun giving it a try but try to remember I've been at this for several hours with three Aleve's and a stiff drink from all the pain this strained on my head reformatting everything. So please be gentle?

When I'm done it should look like a roadmap and this:

I think it looks good. My impression is that Bon Bon isn't a large town, and I think you've drawn it in a pretty fitting size.

I'm still not sure about there being a river nearby. I know it was included in the other map as well, but I don't think I've seen anything in the comic or elsewhere that suggest there being a river this close to the town. I could be wrong, but I've always thought that people to travel further by train to reach Bon Bon, if they had been travelling by ship.

You are correct, Symphony and thanks. Smile I thought iwas a good size. I threw the river in because i though people might like it from the old map, but I do know there's a lake up by Simon's house. So do I have your vote to continue?

I like your map but I wonder, where is the worker district? Simon Blue has a diamond mine somewhere in this mountains. At this epoch this mean a lot of low wage minors and workers. The street need to be sweeped, the garbage need to be picked (the dustbin was still recent (1884 in Paris) but the city seem too clean for that citizens simply throw their garbage by the windows). There must be a poor district somewhere. Maybe a little away from the rest of the town but they have to be parked somewhere.

Also, the Town Hall and city government buildings district seems really large for a that small town that doesn't hold any regional, state or country government. How much building the government really need?

Je penses que des corrections sont nécessaires.

S.P.P.

Uh...Bonbon is fictional, and is somewhat idealized like the Vegas Strip or Disneyland, so having a 'seedy underbelly' may not really be appropriate.

atcually a map like this kinda remind me for a game.

well maybe a video game, but can you picture it to be a board game?

Like a Clue, plush Monopoly fused over layer view style of a board game.

yeah it does look like a theme park map as well,
but a pretty good lookin tho.

Alright! Very Happy Looks like I'm going to be giving it my best to finish it at this rate.

Current Tally
Y=4
N=0

Nice to meet you Aaron_Thom, thanks biorust, niki90. I am hoping to get more opinions and interests from the royal members as well, preferably a majority of them. Gantros, did you have any other opinions thus far or your vote? I agree that there wouldn't need to be a seedy underbelly in town, sounds like the Talon Clan are enough of a mob group to me.

Also thinking about when you asked if including royal member homes and stuff, that gave me an idea to play with I was thinking of today. Perhaps in the future I could somehow make the map interactive but I'll leave those details to a later point since I have no knowledge of programming yet.

The next revision (Ver.IIA) is going to take a little time before I can get it to you all, at least a week. This week especially is going to be hectic with my new contract art pieces to get going and other events of this week that are haunting me making my phone ring off the desk. Sad My plan is after I get some more houses and plots defined and I'll divide the areas into sectors. Once that's done I plan on allowing members to begin claiming their land plot locations for their homes or bussinesses.

But for this week your opinions and questions on changes or certain areas are valued and appreciated. Every questions or comment helps develope it. I'm planning on reformatting the districts like Catherine_Pruce said, shrinking the government department a little and making it the resort area and finish filling in the streets. So keep those comments and questions coming! Very Happy
