Haha, no that wasn't the occupation. It was just one of my first ideas for a fursona, but I couldn't come up with a really good occupation, or really make the character fit in with the rest of Bon Bon in a suitable way. _________________ Constance Mayflower's bio

Just think of the possibilities. Perform the role of Romeo, and all the females in the audience will throw their panties at you. _________________ Constance Mayflower's bio

Um, sorry to butt-in during your monologue, Master Thespian, but that's the wrong monologue if you're holding a skull.
The famous "To be or not to be" soliloquy from Shakespeare's Hamlet, Prince of Denmark occurs in Act III, Scene 1 of the play, as he basically despairs indecisively over what to do with the knowledge that his uncle, the current King Claudius, has murdered his father, the late King Hamlet. The most poplular interpretation I've heard about this soliloquy is that Hamlet is pondering whether to simply end his own life or to push on with his plans to expose his uncle's treachery. At this point in the play, Hamlet's actions have become erratic, a deliberate ploy to allay any suspicions of his actions by making himself appear to be mad (although how much one could call him "crazy as a fox" or "just plain crazy" is always up for debate).
The scene of Prince Hamlet holding a skull doesn't occur until Act V, Scene 1, after Hamlet's first plan to expose the murder failed, and he was sent away to England, presumably to be executed, only to return (by forging the execution order and sending Rosencrantz and Guildenstern to the gallows in his stead). When he returns to Denmark, Ophelia has died as a result of her own madness, and he comes upon a pair of gravediggers, readying a new plot by digging up old bones. This is how Hamlet comes upon the skull of Yorick, a court jester of sorts, whom Hamlet himself remembers fondly. This is the "Alas, poor Yorick.." soliloquy...
But don't worry about it, it's a common mistake, as both monologues are among the most famous of the play (and the "To Be or Not To Be" being among the most famous speeches in literature). People mistakenly mix the two all the time...

Nah, just sort of imagine it as a brief pause and fade to dark while Johnny explains the background behind the scene, only to have your scene fade in and resume in full splendor, with the audience suitably educated! _________________ http://harmlesslion.com |

This is interesting. I always thought that this was the "classic" scene, thanks for the information Johnny I had no idea that there are two scenes that got mixed up. _________________ click here |

Heh. I was going to say something about the fact that "Alas, poor Yorick" is the actual monologue that goes with the holding of the skull, but I'm not that well versed in Hamlet, as I never read it. I'm glad you did, Johnny. A much better, more detailed explanation than I could have given.
I remember that the Yorick bit and the skull go together for a strange reason: I remember an illustration (though I can't remember where this was) of someone holding a skull, quoting the Yorick line, but the words were backwards (i.e. "kciroY roop, sala" instead of "alas, poor Yorick"). _________________ Wow, sarcasm! Actually, I tend to be somewhat surprised more people don't know more Shakespeare... sure, I'm no expert, but I've seen a couple stage productions and more than a few movie adaptations of Shakespeare's works, plus studied Hamlet both in highschool and college (though I've never been in a production of it myself). In fact, the earliest exposure I had to Shakespeare was in the 3rd grade, when the entire 3rd grade class performed Romeo & Juliet.
Guess they don't teach Shakespeare in schools as much as they used to... _________________ Johnny's Fanfics (including Sureshot! A Bon Bon Tale)

The only Shakespeare I remember doing was Romeo and Juliet. We wrote an essay about the opening credits and first scene of Baz Luhrmann's (sp?) movie version, and another about one of the acts (I can't remember which one). Oh, wait, we did do a bit of Twelfth Night, too. Performed parts of it each in class. _________________ Wow, sarcasm! That's original. |
