So much dislike for Red. Is it because he's seen as someone who has planned all of this in advance?
I personally see him as someone who is trying to do what he thinks is right, but is frustrated because he'll have to sacrifice what he really wants for himself. Red doesn't want Mary. I think that's pretty obvious. He's only marrying her because it's what his father wanted, and because he thinks that he can give her a better life than another member of the Clan would.
I think it's pretty clear that he'd rather be with Betty, and the knowledge that he can't have her, is what's causing him to react the way he does.
I'd really like to see more of what happened when he was younger. When did he become so interested in Betty.

Probably when he spent his days "socialising" at the Delight Castle.
What Red is saying, about him being the only chance at Betty and Mary having a better life, may be true, but he's simply using that as an excuse. If he was sincere in his "efforts" he wouldn't have shown up at the DC and slept with Betty, told her he loved her and then went off to see Mary and Simon. He'd have gone straight to the manor without even stopping at the DC. All Red is doing now is using this as a shovel to dig himself out of a hole.
Red is little more than a scoundrel and needs to be smacked upside the head with a pillar, Betty style.

((Take note that this is one of the rare occations I agree with Silvador.
Red is... charming. Not sincere. I find it... highly, darkly, amusing that he's pretty much become all that he hates. He's exclusive, elitest, "knows what's right for others", a charmer, a heart breaker, and a userer. For all that he says he despises those traits in the grand brotherhood, he sure seems ready, willing, and able to use those same talents for his own ends.
So... Red is charming. Not sincere. There is a Huge difference. William is sincere... but not charming. )) |
