Some time last year, a member of the forum made something of a town map. It placed certain locations of interest, like stores and members' homes. This gave people creating and participating in RPs a reference, a guide of sorts as to where places in the town could be located.

That particular member has not been around for some time and of recent, I have been doing some thinking. With the assistance of the forum members, and even Vanessa herself, I would like to create and maintain a map of BonBon.

Of course, it would not be as simple as just slapping down houses and labelling them. That is why I need the assistance of everyone else.

Firstly, if this map is taken seriously by the forum members and I am able to create a good map of the town, I would like to request that it be stickied either on this board (as it is a map of BonBon and this is the general BonBon board) or the RP board (as it would probably be used mainly for RPing purposes). I don't want this map to be just a fan made piece of art. I'm not asking that it be considered the "official" bonBon map. But I would like it to become something serious that new and old members alike can go to in order to see where some one lives, or where a store can be found.

Secondly, I would like to request from Vanessa herself some details regarding the location of key points of interest, such as the Delight Castle itself and Blue Manor. Such details I expect would not need to be very in-depth, little more than general locations and whatever details you, Vanessa, would feel are necessary to their placement and surroundings. Of course, if there are locations yet to be revealed in the comic, there needn't be any details revealed about them. In such a case, I'd only ask that a location be pointed out so that it may be reserved for the later addition.

Thirdly, I ask that each member, for now, discuss just what is needed in town and where it might be. Before I can start placing specific houses and stores, I need a general layout. Key locations must be located to begin with. The fire department, the Inn, the police station, the park, the market district. Before houses and specific stores and buildings can be placed, these key locations, these unique points of interest, must be given their home that the rest of the town rise about them.

At a later time, I will update this post hopefully with more precise details of what is needed for the placement of individual homes and stores as well as the map itself.

Reading your post, my main concern is that it may be seen as too official. Even though you don't want it to be the "official" BonBon map, having it stickied, may give some members the impression that this is the map they should consider the correct one until Vanessa makes one herself. Just link to the thread when needed, instead of having it stickied on the front page.

I don't like the idea of having certain spots reserved for later use either. That might reveal something to come in the story, and it might be problematic for Vanessa.

I think that Ronald said it best the last time a map was discussed:

In terms of a Map for the site, while, I love the idea that fans are making a map of Pleasure Bon Bon, I will say that it will be "unofficial". We can't officially support any map per say, since the story is on going, and it gives Vanessa freedom to add things as the story needs it, and it leaves open imagination for alot of people to see Bon Bon in their own minds.

We aren't discouraging anybody from making maps, so feel free to do so. Just know it is not official. The areas of the map may change in the future when we have an official game map that will require a map.

Basically, I'm saying we can't committ to a map in stone right now. But I like the idea of people formulating what they want to see on the map and suggest a map- this will greatly help us make one official someday. For all I know, it might be exactly the same layout as the fan one. Smile

((Instead of a map what about just something like a things-to-do, or a famous places brochure booklet? Similiar to the Catalog of BonBonites that was being worked on.

That way, the city could still be fluid, but people could get a feel for what there is to do in town. You don't necessarily have to mention where something, just that thus-and-such-a-thingy is available. You might even be able to get away with something like, "In the Appleyard District is the world-famous Kreinstein Brewery. Established in 1818, Kreinstein has brewed and distilled all sorts of spirits for BonBon." Or something like that.

I kinda get the feel that BonBon is like Gotham City. If BonBon needs some cozy, romantic, garden-park, BAM, it now has one. If BonBon needs a Polo Grounds or Brick-and-Stone Train Station, KAPOW, now it has one. Similiar to if Gotham all-of-the-sudden needs a seedy, warehouse, district BOOM it has it. And, yeah, while Gotham has "maps" of itself... about the only thing that each of the maps agrees upon is that Gotham is kinda located near where Philidelphia is... or kinda in Delaware, near Dover.))

1. The map would be clearly labelled as being unofficial in order to discourage anyone from thinking it is official.

2. I don't see how having an area of the map "reserved" would reveal anything or cause problems. The map isn't exactly going to be small and solid, there will be many "lots" for houses and stores and other buildings which can at a later time be adjusted and altered if necessary. To be more precise, it wouldn't really be "reserving" a building lot. More accurately, it'd be a note to say that a major point of interest like a large restaurant of theatre shouldn't be placed here because something else is going to be here in the future. The area would likely be populated as normal with minor buildings like residential homes which can later be "moved" to make room for the later building to be added.

3. I only requested that the thread be stickied for ease of access. Stickying it at the top of either boards would only be making it easier to find later on rather than having to wade through pages of dead threads in order to find and link it when needed. As I stated above, I suggested this board because I feel the BonBon map falls into the category of "General BonBon related things" or the RP board because that would be what it is used most for.

I in no way expect any of these things to happen. I was simply attempting to cover all my bases so to speak.

That may be, but it may still be seen as the "unofficial" map of Bon Bon. I may be nitpicking here, but I'm just getting this impression that your map could end up being seen as more "official" than the other two maps made by fans, whether that's your intention or not.
You said that you don't want it to be just a fan made piece of art. You want it to be stickied, and you want Vanessa to give various details as well as let you know which areas need to be reserved for later use. All that gives me the impression that you're looking to make this map seem more "official" than the other two maps created.

I can't say whether it would cause problems for Vanessa. She'd have to answer that. I'm just suggesting that it's a possibility, in part based on what Ronald said in the other thread.
and I do think that knowing that something is going to happen in a certain spot may, if not outright reveal what's going to happen, then at least lessen the effect of any surprise.

I understand that, but why sticky this thread? Why not the other two maps, or any of the many threads that reveal something important about people's fursonas? Sticky threads should, IMO, be for rules and annoucements, as well as various projects regarding Vanessa's work and those of some of the guest artists. That's why I personally think that if a map is to be stickied, then it should be the official one.

I don't want to discourage you or anyone else from making a map. But why not keep it in the spirit of the other two maps? Those were clearly unofficial. They weren't stickied and they didn't focus on keeping 100% up to date with the comic. Just make a map for fun. Smile

For starters, I was only aware of one other map that was created. As I stated, that map's creator is no longer around. To the best of my knowledge, that map never got the "sticky request". Had it got such a request, I would have supported it.

As for the "official-ness" of this map. It's not so much that I want this map to be official or unofficial, more... real? I only ask for details about locations from Vanessa because for certain locations, specificity the ones she created, Vanessa is in the best position to offer details on those locations.

I'm not trying to run the map along side the comic, I'm merely trying to incorporate any key points of interest in the comic into the map. These requests that I have made are little more than ideal circumstances. If these requests cannot be fulfilled, I will do the best I can with what I have at my disposal. I am under no illusion that my requests will come to fruition. Quite the opposite, in fact. I only made those requests because they are simple, reasonable (at least I imagine so) and because there is no harm in asking. The worst that can happen is each of them saying "No" for one reason or another.

As I stated above, I only wish for the thread to be stickied for convenience. I know that it has little solid reason to be stickied compared to other threads that are already stickied.

As I stated just now, I only requested info from Vanessa because she is in the best position to provide accurate details. I understand that Vanessa is very busy and may not have time to sit around and think up details for a map that has no direct baring on the comic itself. Though the details I seek are little more than general placement details such as whether Simon's Manor is located on the east or west side of BonBon, Vanessa has more important things to tend to.

Well actually I have no time to draw a map very well drawn and full colored ... you know, a good map made as the way I like to do the extras Cool hehe. But I can draw some very indicative sketches, if this can be useful anyway, and upload them here with links.
I hope that will be useful even if they can not be very precise about the proportions and distances, I will make them intuitively, otherwise risk a mental block and never start it because of the anxiety to not be precise enough.
So, can I do just some indicative sketches for now?

That would be absolutely wonderful, Vanessa. It's well more than I hoped for and would be a magnificent start to the map. Thank you so very much.

That is quite alright, Vanessa. Please, don't feel rushed. I understand that you have many, more important, things to attend first.

I think a nice balance of "this is over here" without fully mapping it out is good for the town, similar to Caroline's suggestion.

There are still plenty of comics to be made in this series, and ya never know if a bit of imagination and creativity will come in and make you want to change something, Vanessa.

On that note, what about members who have left? Vanessa, do you still plan to toss them in here and there in little cameo fillers? Like will we see Taladesh or Johnny snuck into a crowd here or there even though they have not visited in a long time, or no longer visit?

That would be a concern to me, for what about members who leave? Will the map suddenly get a "for sale" sign posted on it in an update? Razz

Just food for thought.
