(I just signed up, so sue me)
After I saw the movie, that is what I thought.
colored skin (blue, check)
patterns on skin (check)
big ears (check)
tail (check)
fur (ahh, not so much)
Ok, so they sort of lack all over body hair (probably none in the joy department), but "furry" is just a catch word for anthropomorphous animals (yeah, easier to say furry).
I read up on the thread in here:

Look, its NOT about THE PLOT, its about the characters, the setting, the action, and the hot Na'vi sex. Plots are just there to glue it all together.
Cameron said from the beginning there is nothing special about the plot, it is just a mix mash of similar stories like Dances with Wolves.
But that is what made it do popular!
We RECOGNIZE those plots! Sure they may be plausible, but we KNOW them.
Actually EVERYTHING in that movie is vaguely familiar.
THAT is why this movie is the best selling movie of all time.
BTW, there is another movie that did the same thing and was also a block buster.
Star Wars #4 1977.
It is basically a Space Western with sword play, WW2 air combat, romance, and a little Tarzan and Laural and Hardy to boot in a Sci-Fi story. In 1977 all of those themes where popular and known, and because they where known, that is why George Lucas is rich (good for him!).
Na'vi movie to end by.
