In PBB there are and will be many quotes regarding famous people and works, mainly of the victorian period, mostly in a humorous vein! This topic is dedicated to the quotes and peculiarities of PBB, so you'll get some clarification and you'll find out something more of PBB's universe!
"The Lumière brothers"
In PBB #2, on page 14, I put the original cinematographe, faithfully reproduced, of Louis-Jean and Auguste Lumière, of which you can see a caricature in panel 4. I copied exactly this object http://www.cinematographers.nl/Cameras/Cinematographe.jpg
http://etudiant.univ-mlv.fr/~jsimoni/cinematographe.jpg
and turned the two brothers into two french poodles, http://analysefilmique.free.fr/prehisto/images/lumiere1.jpg ; quite the likeness, uhu?
Even the date of their first world show is exact, it was on December 28th 1895 at the Gran Cafè of Paris, but it's not just that.
August is getting scolded because he hadn't been good in calculating probabilities, unlike the famous mathematician:
" Gaston Darboux "
http://wwwhistory.mcs.standrews.ac.uk/~history/Biographies/Darboux.html , another frenchman of the same historical period.
"Dr. Jeckyll and mr. Hyde"
I was inspired by the famous novel by Robert Louis Stevenson, "The strange case of dr. Jeckyll and mr. Hyde" (1886) for the split personality of William, from which I got the title of issue #2, "Dr. Wilson and mr. William!"; we find out how the mysoginous and awkward William turns into a true out of control "beast" when he finally discovers sex! The difference between the two personalities will be even more evident when Wilson will enter the scene!
"Tony Binarelli"
He's the most famous european stage magician, of italian birth.
He's greatly talented with playing cards and is often invited to Las Vegas for a show http://www.tonybinarelli.com/altro/wms1.htm . In the movie industry he's known as a stunt double in the poker and blackjack scene because the hands shown skillfully shuffling the cards are his own. Maybe William could be an ancestor of Tony? _________________

Nice bit of historical information.I had heard of the Lumiere brothers after seeing their 1901 film about a Fantasy journey to the moon(considered by many to be the first Science Fiction movie ever made) and about Dr.Jeckyl & Mr. Hyde. However, the magician was very interesting to find out about. |

A precisation: the "journey to the moon", was made by George Méliès, the first director that putted special effects in the movies. The Lumière brothers made only short and documentaristic movies. |
