Has anyone ever given some thought into what BonBon might be like in the present day? Obviously, many things change in 112 years, though one must wonder whether a particular charm about the town might withstand the test of time, especially a period of time when so many technological advances and a great deal of social development has occurred (not always for the better). Prostitution obviously still exists but also has the awareness of the dangers of such wild promiscuity. Certainly, there are things that stay the same, but I would think BonBon would change quite a bit with the times. Unless you like to think of the town as having some kind of an invisible "forcefield" around it shadowing it from the inevitable passing of time and growing of new social constructs.

While brothels and things of the sort were certainly more commonplace and expected at the end of the 19th century, I wonder how acceptable such a town would be by today's standards. Even in the story, BonBon was described at the beginning as a peculiar town where nobody asks who you are and this was in 1895. Would such a concept be any less peculiar in modern times? In this day and age, I'd be weary of the consequences of free-ranging behavior such as the possibility for disease but at the same time, modern medicine would obviously be able to test for such things.

We all know BonBon is a unique kind of town, so I wonder if despite how times change, how much would BonBon change with them and how much would it remain the same? Things like clothes are a given for change, but I would think mindsets would be quite different as well. Anymore thoughts on this?

Hopefully this is an interesting enough topic. Smile

I've had this thought several times myself, actually, though I never let it play itself out as far as I could have. Bon Bon has such a pleasant and unique charm and I'd hate for some advancment or another change it for the worse. It's not an idea I relish, let's say.

Well, I have no wish to darken the concept of Bon Bon in any way, Ashton. I'd like to hope it stayed just as it is. I thought it was interesting idea though. If it were still around today, what would the town be like?

I did'nt mean to imply anything else, Nightwolf. It is a most intresting idea and I'd hope the same. I was just voicing my thoughts, trying to add to the conversation.

It was discussed already Smile

but if you ask me, i always saw Bonbon as a free city like San Marino or Monaco so actually no goverment can say anything about their laws and how to behave there. I also think that rules on how to behave there are so strict that anyone who breaks from it will get himself in serious trouble, and for my eye he/she wouldn't last for long there if did so. Besides some town and cities like to be indywidualists, they like to be diffrent from the rest and they stick to it with pride, with their traditions and inner spirit.
So i say Bonbon could be pretty much safe from modern bug, I mean it propably would modern itself along with spirit of time, but all the bounds, traditions etc. would stay since it would be all that what makes the town unique... and it is also a rich town and money have power beyond any belief so i think that city is pretty much safe

i hope you people understood my bad qenglish ^^;

Says the wolf with the errant apostrophes. Laughing

Myself, I'm not sure it would sail through the years so gracefully. I can't help but fear it getting tacky and covered with neon signs. Like Las Vegas.

Given the general location that Vanessa's given for Bon Bon, it's entirely possible that the town was on or near the front lines during the Italian-Austria-Hungarian battles during World War I. I certainly hope I'm mistaken however.

I think it would safely stay the way it is. It would take on the beneficial technological advances, such as phones, proper lighting, and medical help.

If anything, if it stayed in its Victorian ways, it could possibly be even more of an attraction to "see what it was like back then" so BonBon would never have to change. They'd just need to look out for religious crusades against the local activities.

The only thing I think would ever try to effect Bon Bon would be social reform.
